“Πατρίδα” στα γαλλικά:
Le mot patrie (=Πατρίδα, πατρώα γη, πατρική οικία, πατρίς=γη των πατέρων μου) désigne étymologiquement, le « pays des pères ».
L’équivalent allemand est Vaterland ou Heimat et, en anglais, fatherland (ou quelquefois birthplace, le « lieu de naissance »).
Suivant les époques, les lieux et les classes sociales, ce terme recoupe des notions différentes, explicitement ou implicitement1.
Une version relativement moderne et guerrière dit que la Patrie est le pays, la nation, pour lesquels on est prêt à se sacrifier1.
Une version plus sereine dit que c’est le lieu où l’on a ses attaches familiales ou/et émotionnelles, voire, à l’occasion d’une immigration, que c’est le pays que l’on a élu pour y faire sa vie1.
Le patriotisme (mot datant de 1750) est l’attachement sentimental ou politique à la patrie2.
Généralement, la notion de patrie est lourde d’affectivité identitaire ; elle est une affirmation d’une différence ou d’une proximité avec autrui et il peut arriver qu’elle mène à la xénophobie.
